Kindergarten

The visual art standards for kindergarten serve as building blocks for further visual arts instruction. Skills and concepts can vary at this level. It is also important that students begin to develop an art vocabulary and fine motor skills . Students will learn that their works of art are unique and valuable as self expression.

EMPHASIS should be placed on the artistic PROCESS.

  • Demonstrate the safety and care of materials
  • Identify elements of art
  • COLOR

  • TEXTURE

Paint

  • Simple color mixing
  • Develop the use of crayon, pencil, brush, scissors and glue

Creative Expression

  • Students should be encouraged to use their own unique style in their artwork and avoid “cookie cutter art work”
  • Create a work based on The Catholic faith
  • A social or cultural event

1st – 2nd Grades

The visual art standards for grades One and Two will focus on the ideas for art making. Students will acquire ideas from their own experience, school, their religious beliefs, the environment and other cultures. Students will express these ideas using an increasing variety of art materials, techniques and processes.

  • Line
  • Space – foreground, middleground and background
  • Texture
  • Value – tint and shade
  • Balance – Line of symmetry

PAINT – Use tint and shade

DRAW – 3d forms

Students should identify and discuss meanings of symbols/symbolism used in Catholic Sacred Art . (Example: dove as a symbol of the Holy Spirit, or lilies as the symbol for Mary).

3rd Grade

The visual art standards for grades Three, Four and Five emphasize learning through inquiry. Students will examine aspects of the artistic process. Skills and concepts can vary among these three grade levels, with all achieved by the end of fifth grade.

SKILLS

  • Demonstrate the safety and care of materials
  • Identify the elements of Art

3rd grade

  • COLOR – Complimentary
  • SPACE – positive and negative
  • BALANCE – Symmetry vs. Asymmetry
  • DRAWING – gesture drawing, facial and figure proportions, illusion of depth in drawing

Demonstrate self -expression by creating a work of art based on:

  • The Catholic Faith
  • A social or community event
  • Service to a community (i.e. cards for a nursing home or letters to servicemen)

Identify and discuss meanings of symbols used in Catholic Sacred art (Advent wreath, rosary drawing).

Study and look at famous works of Sacred Art.

4th – 6th Grade

The visual art standards for these grades will enable students to use their knowledge and skill to produce and respond to works of art. Cross curricular activities may relate to social studies world geography. Students will gain fluency in using the elements of art.

SKILLS

  • Demonstrate safety and care of materials
  • Identify the elements of art
  • Line – suggestive implied, contour
  • Value – create black and white and color scales
  • Form – one point perspective

Painting – Use color value to create depth.

Drawing – Use value to create texture. Use value to shade. Draw objects from a variety of perspectives.

Creative Expression – Demonstrate self expression by creating a work of art based on:

  • The Catholic Faith
  • a social or cultural event
  • masterpieces or famous works as inspiration to create art

Aesthetic Judgement – Use age appropriate art vocabulary to:

  • Critique an artwork using the elements of art and design
  • Discuss a work of art in relationship to its historical, cultural and functional context.
  • Explore careers in the visual arts.
